I took most of these photos on foot near Chief's Island in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, between June, 1977 and June, 1980, while collecting data for my doctoral dissertation. In just three years this pristine study site yielded a trove of new information on chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) social behavior, and it has continued to prosper ever since (see Okavango Baboon Project).
The images in this gallery, including high-resolution images suitable for printing, can be used without asking my permission, according to the terms of the license agreement.
My thanks go to Prof. William J. Hamilton III, the University of California, Davis, and the government of Botswana for the opportunity to conduct research in the Okavango. Nor would the work have been possible without the help of colleagues Steve Smith, Barbara Kus, Russell Davis, Matthew Rowe, Derek Melton, and Carol Melton. My special thanks go to Peter and Joyce Bestelink of the Xaxaba tourist camp for their cooperation, logistical support, and comraderie.
